Importance of Breakfast for Children

Breakfast: Breaking – a – fast

Children require a good and peaceful sleep for 8 to 10 hours. Once they wake up , it's important to supply essential fuel to their body as their organs demand energy to do various activities but often we don't realize this and send our kids empty stomach or with just a glass of milk to school.
Nowadays, schooling is not as easy as it seems, it requires constant focus and attention on various aspects of the subjects along with vigorous activities. In today’s life, a child’s role is not just to perform good but at its best , as both parents and teachers want them to achieve higher goals  .But many times, a child fails to attain a high performance goal and this non- performance affects his/her confidence and self- esteem. We feel that the environmental factors or peers are responsible but what one doesn't realize is that the child has not broken this long due fast.

There are several reasons for this such as the breakfast you gave or the one provided by the school didn't interest him/her or may be the child was too busy conversing with peers or had some mood swings .So as parents , if you want your child  to perform better or best , it's necessary  to feed them with some ready to go snacks in their breakfast or as their morning snack which are nutritious  , healthy, satisfying and that will help them break the fast ,keep them active throughout their school hours along with boosting their metabolism , immunity, mood and strength.
Lastly, parents should ask their children what have they eaten in school for breakfast , how much they have eaten, what they like and how it should be made next time , also get monthly/quarterly updates from the teacher about their diet, especially if they consume most of their meals in school.

Effects of this unbroken fast:
·        Lack of concentration
·        Tiredness and lethargy
·        Loss of interest
·        Lack of promptness
·        Inconsistent performance
·        Inconsiderate behaviour

·        Feeling morning sickness and avoiding school
·        Lack of stamina
·        Losing self confidence and subsequently even self esteem
·        Disregard/Ignorance for things and people coming in contact
·        Lack of interaction and participation

Below are some tips for a grab – o- run bites:

7 Healthy Foods that are Bad for You

1. Energy Bars
When they tout how much fibre and protein they're packed with — or how minimal their "net carbohydrate" count is — energy bars may seem like super-healthy snacks. But before you eat one of these plastic-wrapped blocks of "nutrients" in your mouth, consider how heavily processed most of them are.The more ingredients listed on the label, the more manufactured energy bars are. Common ingredients in many energy bars are fancy names for different forms of sugar. They spike blood sugar levels and court a crash later on without providing lasting satisfaction and energy.

2. Low-Fat or Fat-Free Yogurt
When a food product cuts out or reduces something we've learned is "bad" from its contents, we falsely conclude it's "better" for us.Not so great if manufacturers compensate for the tastiness lost in doing so by adding the yogurt full of sugar. Many low-fat and fat-free yogurts are so high in sugar that they might as well be considered dessert. Look for unsweetened ones especially Greek yogurts which are healthy.

3. Smoothies
Just because they're jam-packed with whole fruits doesn't mean smoothies are great for our blood sugar levels or for our belt sizes. They are loaded with sugar especially if the smoothie you're buying from the store .Prefer Home made smoothies instead.

4. Granola
The  added ingredients (yes, sugars, once again) and high fat content of most brands makes the stuff  less of a healthy choice for most of our diets so have it in moderation.

5. Frozen Meals
Most frozen meals contain artificial additives ,preservatives added. They are made from  sub standard quality of ingredients.

6. Dried Fruit
Dried strawberries and other berries ,guava, pineapple all are loaded with sugar. Raisins, apricots, prunes, dates, and figs are the only dried fruits that don't have sugar added to them during the drying process.

7. Packaged Fruit Juices
The fruits used are of substandard quality .Once cold pressed, fruit juice is rapidly pasteurized or heat treated. This heating treatment has been shown to destroy a lot of the nutritional value of the ingredients along with the naturally occurring digestive enzyme within the fruit and changes the pH from alkaline to acid. The primary purpose of this processing is to extend the fruit juice's shelf life. The additives and preservatives added to the juice may cause carcinogenic effect on our body.

If you are going to buy prepackaged or processed snacks and foods choose ones that have at max five ingredients — though ideally three or less. Lastly, be wary of lofty claims — i.e., "As much vitamin C as an orange!" "High in fibre!" — especially if these boasts are slapped onto foods you'd otherwise consider "bad for you." Always wiser to seek the purest source of a nutrient when possible.

Eating these wonder foods everyday will keep the doctor away.
Our immune system does a great job of keeping us healthy and preventing infections. However, we need to support it with the right foods so it works better and in turn helps us in the process.
  1. Garlic – this grandmother’s ally has immense infection fighting ability. Being a natural detoxicant, unlike with antibiotics there are no side effects. It protects our body against bacterial and viral infections. The three powerful compounds (allicin, ajoene and thiosulfinates) contained in it helps the body prevent and fight infections. In the mornings or as an after office snack you could toast up a slice of bread. Spread butter on it and sprinkle raw minced garlic over it. Relish a super garlic toast. Have you ever tried making some sauce by combining this herb with an egg yolk and some oil? Doesn’t it sound yum? If you can eat a clove of raw garlic in the morning, pick up that habit.
  2. Ginger – spicing up your meals with ginger is a great way for boosting your immune system naturally. It helps to cleanse the lymphatic system and prevent the accumulation of toxins in our body organs. The quickest way to incorporate ginger in your diet it to add finely chopped ginger to boiled water, let it steep for 2-3 minutes. Strain out ginger and sip good health. Sprinkle dried ginger into any salad dressing or add finely chopped pieces to soups.
  3. Turmeric – If there’s a healer sitting on your kitchen shelf it is this yellow herb. Curcumin, the active ingredient present in turmeric, is anti-viral and anti-fungal. Whenever you use turmeric, add black pepper also to the recipe. This will increase your body’s absorption of turmeric significantly. Eggs can be scrambled using butter and turmeric can be sprinkled over it. Don’t forget to add the pepper while you add salt. If you are a rice lover, adding turmeric to rice also adds good flavor. Curries and soups with a pinch of turmeric in them is the best way to include this root in daily diet.
  4. Basil (Tulsi) – Worshiped in most Indian homes eating the leaves of this herb every morning is a sure shot way to keep diseases at bay. Also, gives relief from cirrhosis and other infections of the liver. Whether adding it to pasta or to soups or while making pesto sauce it complements every food. Dried basil can be easily added to any dish including the chicken recipes.
  5. Oregano (dried ajwain) –  doesn’t that pizza or garlic bread always taste better when this Italian herb is sprinkled over them? At least, I love it that way! Rosmarinic acid, which is a strong antioxidant found in oregano supports immune system health. It also has compounds that inhibits inflammation. Studies have shown it to be beneficial for conditions including osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis. You can garnish your omelettes with oregano. Oregano also goes great with sautéed mushrooms and onions too.
  6. Barley – loaded with beta-glucan which is a special fiber compound that has powerful antioxidant properties, you must consume this regularly. Barley water is known to be good for kidneys and also to treat arthritis and rheumatic diseases. It speeds wound healing and is thought to make antibiotics more effective. Boil barley until soft, strain the extract; add lemon or orange flavor and little bit of sugar if needed. You can refrigerate it and drink a glass daily.
